Is Hyaluronic Acid Effective To Use On My Skin?

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Now when you hear the word, acid, your mind immediately jumps to negative associations! You may think of some simmering liquid that burns any object it comes in contact with. The surprise with Hyaluronic Acid is that it is an intense humectant! The acid is naturally occurring in our bodies and keeps spaces lubricated. It has a gel like consistency due to the fact that it is able to hold nearly 1000 times its weight.  Some of the common places it is found in large quantities are the joints (synovial fluid), eyes and cell membranes.

This water loving molecule carbohydrate keeps you hydrated from the inside out. As we age, production slows down drastically after 40. This then leads to dry skin, wrinkles and arthritis. Without this spongy substance; achieving, fuller, supple, appearance becomes more difficult. It’s impossible to duplicate levels from your youth but you can use moisturizers and serums. These methods can generate significant results.

How To Use Hyaluronic Acid

Now this ingredient comes in many forms that can be applied on your face. There are supplements, fillers and creams. You may be familiar with popular fillers: Restylane and Juvederm. These fillers are typically used for lip injections to create a fuller and plump appearance.

The more popular approach is to use a moisturizer or serum containing HA. These creams act as a barrier to give skin a plumper texture and filler for fine lines. When applied to the surface of skin, they build a shield. This shield then traps moisture from leaving your skin due to free radicals. Free radicals can be found in the environement.

Over the counter creams and serums should be applied at night for best results. After cleansing and toning skin, apply product. It is best to keep product on throughout night for full effect.  It is recommended that this be the last step in your routine.
