What Causes Puffy Eyes?

For starters the area around the eyes is very sensitive and thinly layered. As you can observe there is a plethora of blood vessels surrounding the under eye area. These vessels become more pronounced when applying eye makeup or contact lenses. The main cause for puffy eyes comes down to water retention and swelling; whether it be from crying, that time of the month or a night of drinking. When you cry, tear ducts work over time to produce tears and with no where to go, they seep into the skin beneath your eyes.

When its that time of month, bloating occurs throughout the body, thanks to hormones. Drinking causes the body to dehydrate, as a result eyes dry out and the increased salt levels cause water retention to kick in. In addition to water retention, the skin around the eyes becomes irritated from the increased salt that “burns” the skin. Whenever your salt balance is off, even by the slightest amount, your body switches into water retention mode to compensate for the imbalance.
