We all know that feeling when we really need to remove our nail polish but the bottle of polish remover is nowhere to be found. It’s usually around the same time when our nails are horribly chipped – so much so that we would rather just have bare nails.

But what can you do – after all, nail polish remover is the only way to take the polish off properly.

Well, this doesn’t necessarily have to be the truth. In fact, there are many more ways to remove your nail polish.

Here are more ideas on that.

How to remove nail polish

We all love painted nails. However, removing it? Not so much. This might be because we are lazy or because we just don’t like the smell – some of us even forget.

But having chipped nails is not a good picture. Luckily, there are many ways to remove your nail polish in a pinch and it doesn’t include running like crazy to buy a remover.

Okay, one of them might.

Here are some of the best ways to remove your nail polish.

Nail polish remover – This is an obvious answer. However, it’s really the best option. Especially nowadays when you can get all sorts of polishes, some of which are acetone-free. This one is clearly better for your nails but it might take just a bit longer than with the acetone. All you need is a cotton pad and enough of remover to clean your nails. You can also put your soaked cotton pads on your nails and wrap them in aluminium for a while.

Nail polish – Wait, what? It’s true – you can remove your nail polish with more nail polish. Use any color or a top coat, wait for about 30 seconds and then wipe it off with a tissue.

Rubbing alcohol based products – This means that you can use hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol, hairspray, perfume, body mist, deodorant and so on. They need some time to work but they do work. Apply your product and let it sit for a minute and then wipe it all off with a cotton pad. For thicker polishes, you will have to work a bit harder but it’s a viable option.

What is the healthiest nail polish remover?

There are many nail polish remover options out there, as mentioned. Some are with acetone and some are without but what you really should be avoiding are the toxic trio. These chemicals include toluene, DBP, and formaldehyde which are dangerous and used to be normal in nail products. Companies are producing better nail products because of this. Acetone is also very replaceable as there are more and more nail products without it.

What can you use instead of nail polish remover?

If you love changing your nail color and design, keeping on one manicure for long can be a torture. This the reason why you always need a trusted remover by your side to help you clear your polish. You have probably tried all of the conventional options but you want to know more. What to do when you are in a pinch? How to make the process easier?

Here are some great ways:

We’ve already covered it, but it doesn’t hurt to say it one more time – You can actually remove your nail polish with some more nail polish and a tissue.

You can use a hairspray as well. Keep in mind that it can dry your nails out and make them peel which is not what you want. Be quick to wipe it off.

Toothpaste is also a great remover. Use a small amount on every nail and scrub with an old toothbrush. White toothpaste is the best.

You can also remove nail polish with body sprays, perfumes, deodorants and other alcohol-based products. Keep in mind that you do have to wipe quickly as they can all dry your nails.

Lemon juice and vinegar is a great mix for removing the nail polish. Mix one tablespoon of lemon juice and a tablespoon of white vinegar. Blend well and soak your fingers for 5 to 10 minutes in warm water. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and wipe the polish off.

Warm water and cloth is a natural method that can help you get rid of all remaining nail polish. Take some warm water and soak your fingers in it for 20 minutes or a bit more. Then take the cloth and rub the nails with the dry cloth.

Finally, you can make your own nail polish very simply and easily. So, if you are running late and need a remover – or you are just too lazy to go get it, here are some recipes that can help you:

Lemon + Water

This is a simple and healthy recipe for a nail polish remover. All you have to do is take the lemon, slice it and rub a slice on your nails. Before that, soak your fingers in warm and soapy water for 5 minutes. Voila! The nail polish will be gone.

Vinegar + Lemon Juice

This recipe was already mentioned but it’s still one of the best out there. Mix equal parts of lemon and vinegar and then soak a cotton ball with this mixture. Keep it on your fingers for about 20 seconds to remove the polish.

Rubbing alcohol + Water

Alcohol is a good option because it’s really quick and it works. It also has antibacterial properties which are great for people with nail infections. You will need to soak your fingers in warm water for a while and then soak a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and wipe off your nail polish.

So, in essence, there are many things that can remove your nail polish – even nail polish itself. However, keep in mind that commercial polish removers still give the best results because they have been formulated for that. Natural solutions are fun and they can really change your nail game, but test things out with normal expectations. If you expect these natural solutions to be as speedy as acetone-based remover, you will get annoyed really quickly.

But, these solutions are healthier for your nails and skin. They won’t make it dry or make your nails brittle. Patience is really the key to great nails.
