DIY: Naturally Based Makeup Removers

Makeup has the power to transform and enhance your features with the proper technique and products. Given the many varieties available curated for each and every skint type, there's just anything for everyone. As great as makeup can be, it's important to remove it each night before bed. Failure to remove all traces of makeup before bed or a workout can lead to pre-mature aging and formation of acne. There's nothing worse to waking up the morning after and finding traces of last night's makeup still setting on your face. Avoid that slept in look with these easy, simple and naturally based makeup removers that nourish skin as they remove makeup.

Most Effective Makeup Removers

These products not only remove makeup; but, they can also be used as part of your skin care regime. These ingredients are great for those seeking a chemical free alternative or those with sensitive skin.

Rose Hip Oil

There are many oils to choose from when it comes to removing makeup; however, there are many benefits that set this oil apart. For starters this oil is known anti-aging properties like reducing hyper pigmentation and age spots. This oil is known for being deeply moisturizing which makes it great for those that battle with dry skin or eczema like symptoms.

Although it is an oil; it is non-comedogenic, which means it won't clog pores. The oil has a lightweight texture and a golden like hue. This non-irritating option is perfect to remove waterproof make up which often needs additional rubbing to completely remove.

This oil is rich in Vitamins C and A which are anti-aging super vitamins that reduce the appearance of fine lines, sun damage and scars.

Directions

Use a dropper to apply 1-2 drops onto cotton round and gently remove makeup with light wipes

Note: If you find an oil to be too heavy, a rose water mist may be a better alternative

Witch Hazel

This product is hands down on of the best multi-taskers when it comes to skin care. It's perfect for all skin types; it makes a great toner while adding moisture back into skin. It's perfect for those with acne prone skin due to its natural antibacterial properties that remove makeup and unclogs pores. It's better to use a witch that is alcohol-free because the alcohols can dry out skin and cause it to produce oil to compensate for moisture loss. If you find witch hazel to be too harsh on skin, try diluting with a 1:1 ratio of water.

The two active ingredients are composed of polyphenols and tannins which make this ingredient a natural astringent that removes excess oil. These ingredients also promote healthy cell growth and anti-inflammatory properties to eliminate free radicals while removing makeup.

Bentonite Clay

The most gentle of the three most popular clays readily available, this clay becomes “electrically charged” when combined with water. Most makeup products, dirt and oil carry a positive charge; whereas, clay carries a negative electrical charge. In an effort to achieve a neutral charge, clay seeks out positively charged ions. Clay is known for its ability to pull out impurities, toxins and harsh chemicals that would seep into skin.

This variety is known for its detoxification properties and gentle texture which easily sloughs off dead skin and makeup. This clay is best to use shortly after preparation; due to the fact that it will lose effectiveness the longer it sits out.

Directions

Create paste by mixing 1/2 TSP clay and 1/3 water, mix with plastic whisk (avoid using metal, it will deactivate clay). Place paste over slightly damp skin, leave on for 15-20 minutes and wash with warm cloth. 

Sweet Almond Oil

This oil is commonly used in conjunction with coconut oil or as carrier oil for other oils. Sweet almond oil is typically used in hair masks; however, its effectiveness as a facial oil makes this a great multi-use product. For starters, this oil is non-comedogenic, which is great news for those with oily or combination skin. This hypo allergic oil works wonders for those with sensitive skin seeking relief.

Sweet almond oil boosts antioxidant properties that protect skin against sun damage and reverse existing sun damage due to its high Vitamin A content. Of all the facial oils out there, this oil has the lightest texture and is easily absorbed into skin.

Directions

Using an eye dropper, apply 1-2 drops on cotton round or apply to clean finger tips (the warmth of your body helps this oil to be more easily absorbed). Gently wipe away until makeup is fully removed.
