How to Create a Naturally Based Lip Oil Treatment

Looking to revamp your beauty routine & perfect that pout? Kiss your store bought products goodbye and say hello to smooth, luscious lips! By utilizing ingredients commonly found in your kitchen (or a quick trip down the grocery aisle) you can create unique, all-natural lip care products from home.

Whether you’re looking to try a new scrub or want a true-to-you lip color, read on to see just how easy it can be to mix it up.

Scrub a Dub Dub!

A healthy smile starts with smooth lips. Routinely removing dead skin cells will increase your circulation and create a wonderful base for all lip stains and glosses. Chapped lips are especially common in the cold days of winter and can result in dry, flaky lips. This can be painful and may lead to cracked, bleeding lips.

Ouch! Avoid the Joker-esque  grin by exfoliating once or twice a week and follow with a nourishing moisturizer. This basic recipe will get you started, but feel free to add your own unique twist by swapping the sugar type or substituting your fave oil.

Tropical Tantalizer
  • 1 ½ tsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. raw, organic honey
  • 1 tsp. organic cocoa butter
  • 1 tsp. extra-virgin coconut oil
  • 2 drops Lime Essential Oil

Once the ingredients are combined, apply a small amount to your lips and surrounding skin, scrubbing gently for at least 30 seconds. Rinse with cool water, pat dry, and enjoy!

Oh, Honey

Masks are also a great way to achieve lips that are oh so soft and kissably smooth. Not a fan of gritty scrubs? Raw, unfiltered honey is a great source of hyrdoxy acid, which will chemically exfoliate your pout without damaging the delicate skin. Combine equal parts honey and your favorite oil (try coconut, avocado, or olive) and leave on your lips for 5-10 minutes.

DIY Lip Balm

Feel like you’re always applying chapstick but still feel… chappy? That’s because most store-bought lip balms contain ingredients such as petroleum, parabans, and artificial fragrances. All of these types of ingredients can irritate your sensitive skin and exacerbate your chapped lips. Whipping up an all-natural alternative can be simple and cost effective. Once you’ve found a favorite recipe, make a couple of large batches and store in clean, tightly sealed containers to preserve freshness.

Play around with organic additives to lend a pop of color to your DIY pucker.  Mica powder is a great, cosmetic grade ingredient for adding color. Make sure whichever hue you choose, add the coordinating ingredient SLOWLY; you can always add in more tint, but adding too much may result in a more dramatic color than you wanted.

  • Red Tones: Beet root powder, natural red food coloring, pink rose mica
  • Taupe/Brown Tones: Cinnamon, cocoa powder, tumeric
Sweet Summery Raspberry Lemonade Balm
  • 2 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 2 tsps. Organic Raspberry Gelatin Mix (for color)
  • A few drops of Lemon Essential Oil

Place your coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl & heat for 10-20 seconds. Keep an eye on it, as coconut oil melts very quickly. Add your Raspberry Gelatin Mix and stir well. Place back in the microwave and melt for another few seconds; it should now be entirely liquid.

NOTE: Once the coconut oil solidifies, the color will be more muted than your current result; for a more dramatic stain, simply add more Raspberry Gelatin Mix.

Stir in the lemon essential oil. Once combined, pour the mixture into a small, sealable container. You can use a traditional lipstick tube or a small pot. Be careful as the mixture may be quite hot. Let cool before using and apply as needed to enjoy a smile as sweet as the days of summer!

Feel free to walk on the wild side and overhaul this recipe to suit your needs; trade the Raspberry Gelatin Mix for a funky purple or velvety chocolate tone. Not a fan of lemon? Incorporate vanilla and orange essential oils for a classic confection. The possibilities are endless; get your DIY on and start mixing!
